I've made a couple of cakes that when I move them the icing begins to crack. I hate that because it loses that smooth effect that I want. What can I do to prevent this from happening?

Cracking icing is almost always a problem of the board underneath the cake not being strong enough. You'll need to double or triple regular cardboards or use a drum.
