I received an order for RD cake. And I've never made one before. The client wants a shoe box and a shoe. So it needs to be durable and moist. I'm a bit confused on which one tastes the best. Can anyone let me know which recipe is best for this design? thank-you gracie
Thank-you, I just found it. I hear a lot about not using the boxed version because it tastes nothing like the real thing. And that's what I need. The real thing. thank-you again
I give a hearty "second that!" to wierkd's suggestion!
Cake Man Raven's recipe is the best I've tried for a traditional RV.
It's not chocolate cake (with only a couple Tbsp worth in the recipe, and includes vinegar and buttermilk. IMHO, it's PERFECT.
HTH, and good luck,

Thank-you Now I'm more convinced then ever to give it a try. Off to the supermarket I go. OMG how excited yet nervous I am about this order. I love challenges though. baci
Love Cakeman, my favorite... but there are two changes to his recipe floating all around the internet and in my opinion, it does make the cake better.
1) Reduce the oil by 1/4 c
2) Increase the cocoa powder by 1 to 2 tbsp
If you choose to used his icing, he several versions. Use 3 sticks of butter instead of 2. One version has it up to 4 sticks, but I haven't tried it yet.
The search does not bring up Cakeman's recipe... a link, please
Thank-you very much. I can always rely on CC for best results. thank-you
OK, maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see a recipe for it. Just a few others, like the Apple Slab, or Doughnut Muffins (which I can't wait to make).

Question ladies & gents, May I use raw apple cider vinegar instead of distilled vinegar in this recipe? I think it's better. can anyone let me know? I just googled it and it seems to be the same. Has anyone used it? thank-you

I agree, Cakeman Raven recipe but I cut the oil even more, I only use 1 cup oil (though the recipe says 1 1/2 cup) and I increase the cocoa powder and vanilla
pattycakesnj, I'll have to try that. The 1 1/4 is still extremely moist. I use vanilla bean paste and I'm pretty heavy handed in all of my recipes.
graciesj, I have never tried it, but DC Cupcakes uses apple cider vinegar. They say it is more mellow and sweeter.
By the way, google Cakeman Raven for an interesting read. He has been shut dwn by the health dept several times. One time for no running water because he didn't pay the bill. Employees were washing their hands in a bucket. I think a payroll check bounced and an employee turned him in.

So what are we saying here? This recipe isn't good????????
No! It's wonderful. But after already having a retail business, being on Throwdown and having his fantastic recipe all over the internet, he still could not parlay that into a viable business. Wouldn't we all like that kind of jumpstart?
Tell me about it. I only pray that he takes this lesson and learns from it. thank-you again
Cakeman's recipe is delicious...use it all the time.
good to know. I'm making it tomorrow, cannot wait
Can't get the recipe to come up. Can anyone give it to me.
Thanks
