Do I Need To Use A Dam When Filling A Caramel Cake

I am making my first caramel cake this weekend and will also fill the cake with the caramel icing . Do I need to use a dam before using the caramel?

I do one no matter what the filling is, i thicken my icing with sugar and use that, than i dirty ice and put in the freezer for a while that way it will stay and not get the ring on the middle.
Tried not using the dam on couple fillings and it just didn't work.
