i was wondering if there is an alternative to using Cigarellos on a display cake.

It depends on the effect you are going for, what type of cake?
in the Uk there are long thin biscuit fingers covered in chocolate made by Cadbury's that would work well.

Possibly chocolate malt balls or marshmallows halved?

or those wafer biscuits, like for ice cream - there might be one in my pictures. or even think of candy barel cakes - use of kit cats, candy canes etc. but nothing i can think of has the same look as cigarellos.
