I want to make little handbags and shoes for cupcakes. Can I get good enough detail with modelling chocolate or am I better off using fondant? I know the chocolate tastes better!

I would think that you could do everything you wanted in modeling chocolate. It is very versatile. Some people use it in place of fondant, even to cover cakes with.
