I would like to make a cake similar to this picture --> http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1732550

Instead of carving the shapes, I will use this cake pan for the ball shapes --> http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001TI7SAM/?tag=cakecentral-20

My question is, will I need some type of support under each ball? I know it might sound silly but I just want to make sure.

TIA

if the cake you're placing them on is only 2" tall then no, however having them on their own board may make for easier serving.

As a general rule of thumb you want to use dowels and board for every 4" of veritical cake. If you're placing these on a 4" tall cake i would put dowels under them just to be on the save side.
