Ugh!!trying To Make Pine Tree Cones. Help!

Help me all. I am trying to do pine tree cones. I got the tip from the cake store, and she told me this is what they use. But mine look like poop on a stick. Does anyone have suggestions or should I make do these out of gum paste?? All suggestions are going to be helpful. Thanks to all. You never let me down.

Check out Kara's tutorial on pine cones, the most realistic ones I have ever seen. (costumeczar) She has the directions on her blog.

There's another pinecone tutorial that was here on CC last year -- she did it from piped chocolate that she let bloom. I'm still looking for the link. Stay tuned...

Here is a link to the pinecones that I made for a cake. I used the tutorial mentioned above. It wasn't very hard and the results were beautiful.
