I am making a baby shower cake for this Saturday. 10" round for the bottom and on top I want to use my oval cake pans to make a bassinet. This is the first time I will be making a fondant cake since my cake classes a while ago. This will be an ambitious project for me but I feel confident I can pull it off. I'm not being paid for this cake so I plan to save a few dollars by making marshmallow fondant.

My questions are: To cover the oval cakes I plan to "drape" the fondant to let it have a rippled fabric appearance, can mmf do this without stretching or cracking? Next, the hood of the bassinet I do plan to make out of gum paste so I can be sure it hardens and won't droop but I am concerned about whether it will stay up once I attach it to the top of the cake. Anyone have experience with this? I was thinking that if I attached it with royal icing and placed a support underneath while it dries that the RI would be a strong enough glue to keep it up. Thanks in advance - Christy
