I am over 50 and do not consider myself geraitic. Not when I can still run3 miles a day. I would put that term closer to 65- 70. After all we are the generation that says 40 is the new 30 and on and in.
However I would be dead inn the water on that show. Know the recipes in my head? Um no.....I have to double and triple check and I have still forgotten something.

That's the beauty of master recipes with variations - a basic pound cake, sponge cake and angelfood cake recipe, memorized, can give you tons of variations, almost all of which can be made into cupcakes.

I cannot stand how he demeans, belittles and humiliates people. I'm sorry, there is nothing professional about that. And yes, the show is for the masses, just like all the other competition shows (Top Chef - I don't cook; Project Runway - I know nothing about fashion), yet they treat everyone with the utmost respect
I think Buddy knew before they started who he wanted to kick off. Wasn't it Joe's cupcake he said was a "half off" cupcake because the cake didn't go to the top of the paper? Yet, after that he went to cupcakes that had even less cake in them, it was clearly visible that there was 1/4 - 1/2 inch of paper above the cake, yet not a word. And did he REALLY have to call his team, the misfits?
I know shows pick those that will easily be kicked off first. Joe is a pastry chef, not a cake decorator, so why put him on the show at all if you don't care about his baking skills, only his decorating skills and yet put others who are decorators?
Joe, you showed class, integrity and dignity, good for you.
Buddy has become nothing more than an immature bully on this show. The good thing about last night's episode is that Mary wasn't on it. Sorry Mary, but I just can't listen to you anymore, even though I know you'll be back on, but I probably won't be watching by then. Of course, this show is also like a car wreck; you don't want to look, but you still do. This might break that urge though.

I thought that Joe made a good point during his ride in the truck- he had expected to have his chance to show how well he could bake pastries, pies, etc. The show, after all, has baker in the title not cake decorator. I think that some of the contestants are confused by this show, too.
They don't have any forums up to discuss the show. TWOP has forums about all the reality/competition shows but not this one. Curious.
They are just star shaped cakes staggered...
It was much more than that. They were sculpted, textured, colored and seemed perfectly engineered for the quick glimpse they gave.

I haven't checked out TWOP in some time, but perhaps this show isn't big enough for them to worry about.

We'll see next week... but from what we've seen so far I doubt it is anything done "perfectly". I know you love the show and all, but my expectations are not as high.
I stand corrected- TWOP now has a forum up.

That was Jay's cupcake that was "half off"; Joe had the carrot cupcakes that didn't look like carrot cake (in my opinion, they didn't, they looked more like cornbread muffins)
Here is Jay's website: www.maplesweddingcakes.com
Edited to add: I can't stop watching the show, it's like a train wreck and I can't stop looking. (hangs head in shame)
As a fan of Cake Boss, I am disgusted with Buddy and his team for their behavior to the contestants on this newest show. Its painful and heartbreaking to watch. People don't deserve such harsh, RUDE, ect ect ect treatment. I hope this is the only season of this show. I dont think it'd be right to put anymore people through this horror than they already have.

I am talking about master recipes. I still would have a problem!
Those brain cells are just not what they used to be......
Crazycakes.com is the website for Brian. His work on there is amazing...not sure what is up with the cakes on the show??
I'm on the show! I'm not offended by your comments because I sat where you are now judging from home. Being on the show is completely different from decorating at home or in your own bakery. Think about it, you are viewing from an edited perspective. Remember It is TV. Which means they want to make money based on Ratings.
Please do me a favor and look at my work and tell me I'm horrible if that is what you believe. I am not above your critique by any means. I have thick skin and I can take it.
But also know I am as real as it gets. Im not proud of all of my work on the show most of it is not up to my standards. But I busted my tail and you are about to see just how much drive I really have. If I was ashamed of my true ability, I would not be posting this!

Hi Brian. I checked out your pics and they are outstanding! I hope that you got a chance to show your talent. I understand that you can't give any details about the show.
Crustymuffin/Brian, impressive post . I'm sure being on the show was completely different. I have seen your website and am blown away by what's there. That's exactly why I posted what I did earlier. Still, after seeing how the first 2 episodes aired, aren't you concerned about how you've been portrayed and if it may affect potential customers' faith in your ability?? Even if it is due to editing?
I will say this, now I want to see your drive so I guess I'll keep watching !
Best of luck to you!
I don't know--it's like y'all never had a deadline or something. And of course you have. Add two other people into your pie. In a relatively unfamiliar kitchen--sharing everything with lots of other people
I mean really ---sure Buddy's kinda raw but that's not new either--the rest is pretty cool --all I gotta say is don't try this at home!
This show does not define me or my abilities. I'm not an expert on all things and learning is the most important thing in life.
I signed up for an opportunity. The opportunity that many of you want. I did my best under the situation I was in. I'm proud of that and the fact that I was honest and hard working. I can't change the perception this show has to some. But I will be fine and my clients know what my abilities are.
I am not a fan of the show itself, I know you are very talented as is Jay - I don't know much about the rest of them! And you are very right, I (personally) know MANY who would have given their right arm to have been on the show. Good luck!

Thank you, yes it was Jay's. They made such a big deal about his not be big enough, but not a word to anyone else, they were ok...... ugh

Brian, you are absolutely right, and that is part of the problem. I think their perspective of what is going to make them the money is very skewed. The type of behavior and language being exhibited is anything but professional. I think it comes across as a low class, bully fest. People do not deserve to be spoken to in the manner I've seen. There is a way to say someone's work is not good without being rude and demeaning.
Maybe we're all wrong, and maybe the general public loves the show, but I haven't read of many people who are writing positive things about seeing the show. Though the show seems to be more of a "filler" until they can go back into production of Cake Boss.
Plus I find it deplorable that they advertised for contestants and the premise of the show very differently than what they ended up doing. That isn't right, and especially to not contact those people again to say there was a change in the premise.
I'm surprised it's been allowed to continue. Surely the mods, owners, others knew someone from this show was here. OMG....it's awful...whatever else the initial post was. Very interesting that this was allowed to continue on such a PC huggy site.

Good morning! Speaking for myself, I havent questioned anyone's abilities. However, I do believe if you are going to advertise for Amateur's, then that is what you should recruit. Now, let me add this - an amateur to me is one without pay and/or formal training. Moving forward -I have no idea of any of the contestants training, so maybe that is how you all qualify. We could beat this horse to death - however in past posts I stated that I applaud all of you for putting yourself into a position where you are constantly under the gun.
Personally - I dont believe I am ready to be on a show like this. All shows of this nature seem to be looking for ratings and hype at someones expense. Very good exposure for the bakers, if nothing else but to be able to use the logo on your established website. To see a childs smile when his/her cake is delivered is all the gratification I need at this point. We all start with small baby steps.
I wish you all luck and I may continue to watch.
Kindest regards, T
Omg--I think this thread is a train wreck!
The train wreck part to me is this further drama where people are revealing their personal disappointment in the show for not maintaining this expectation of moral untouchableness some kind of sugary high ground. It's like Buddy shot their puppy. Dude, it's a tv show. It's not a ministry of the Church of the Decorated Cake. Lighten up.

As I see your point, they do have a right to their own opinion.

Well yeah, me too--what?
I don't understand the personal grief.

Your right - you do and you have stated your opinion. As stated, I see your point.
Personal grief is just what you said "personal".
I looked this up in the Business Dictionary. com
professionalism
DefinitionMeticulous adherence to undeviating courtesy, honesty, and responsibility in one's dealings with customers and associates, plus a level of excellence that goes over and above the commercial considerations and legal requirements.
This is the biggest problem with this show, how it exists now (not what they advertised for). These are professional people competing in this competition, why are they not treated as professionals? There is no need or reason to degrade, demean and belittle adults you have a certain level of control over. Yes, they can leave, but they attempting to achieve a goal, something better for themselves. I've looked at several of the websites of these contestants and their quality of work is beautiful. Yes, they are in a strange kitchen, stepping out of their comfort zone, etc., but I also believe it's the bombardment of the putdowns, the condescending comments and tones that has to have as much effect of their results as anything else. This is the type of show that just lowers the standards of professionalism and common decency, and I'm just not ready to accept that yet. This is getting to be the equivalent of the Jerry Springer of cake shows.
I prefer the like of other shows, even cc where people reach out to help and support each other. This is what I think we should be striving for.
