How do you keep flowers etc from falling off the side of the cake while the royal icing or whatever has been used as glue is drying? I can only think of inserting sewing pins underneath them to hold them up, but there must be a better way?

Sometimes I insert pins underneath to hold stuff up. Sometimes I prop a piece of foam sponge under the thing.
