Since I am just a "for the fun of it" kind of baker I will not be turning out stunning cakes w/ master techniques, so I need tricks! I have found a few using candies and cookies and such and was wondering in anyone had any other ideas / pics for me to get inspired by

here are some I found..

I saw a cake decorated with crushed hard candies that looked like it was covered in crystals icon_smile.gif
I have also seen cakes decorated with non-pariels and chocolate Rolos, etc.
Here is one using marshmallows:

Years ago I was asked to do a last minute cake for someone's birthday. The theme was beach volleyball and the shore.

I knew about gumpaste and fondant, so I made the volleyball items, but when it came to the shore, I went to Wegman's candy department and bought a bunch of different gummy fish and turtles, some licorice whips and candy rocks, and made an under-the-sea border around the sides of the cake.

It was pretty cool for someone with no formal training at the time.
