Cutting Fondant

I made an amazing cake for my sister/friend engagement party. The 3-tier fondant cake turned out really nice and everyone seemed to love the design. However, when I went to cut the cake to serve, the fondant seemed to be a little rubberish and hard to cut. Is this normal for fondant cakes? Should I have used a special knife to cut the cake? Please help....
