to make it softer and stay that way longer than the length of time it takes to roll and get it on the cake?
There's a really helpful DVD on the market by Jennifer Dontz called "easy and tasty way to perfect fondant"... it not only adds a great flavor to the fondant, it makes the fondant more silky, and it gives you more working time while applying the fondant to the cake! I haven't had one issue of dried fondant (or elephant skin) since I started using that recipe!
It's the BEST thing I have ever bought that has helped me achieve better results with applying fondant!!

I use a little light corn syrup. Helps with pliability.
