I want to paint a scroll design on a fondant cake and glaze it to give it a very high shine. My worry is that the painted design might get smudged when I try to glaze it. Should I do it in reverse? ie. glaze first and paint the scrolls on with a little colored glaze? Has anyone done this before? Thanks in advance.

I have applied confectioners glaze over painted cakes with no problem. Obviously, the paint needs to be completely dry. And, of course, you don't want to go over the same area too much.

Diane, your cakes are beautiful!
I find that the gel colors don't completely dry.How long do you wait to paint on it?

I try to use airbrush color whenever I can. Or, powdered colors mixed with alcohol. If I have to use gel color, I mix it with some alcohol or sometimes just water. Helps it evaporate faster. Anyway, I usually have to wait an hour minimum befpre I can glaze.
