Whenever I decorate a cake with cream cheese icing, the icing cracks when I pick the cake up. Does anyone know how I can make the icing stay smooth?

My experience has been to make sure the cake board is strong to support the weight of the cake. I now use cake drums.

You could try mixing the cream cheese icing with some buttercream. It makes it a bit more stable.
