I'm making an owl cake in a couple of days. I'm using 8x2" pans stacked 4 high and round top using a bowl...so it'll be kinda big. The plan is to cut out individual feathers and attach to buttercream frosted cake. Will these feather pieces stay in place well enough or will I need to cover the cake in fondant then attach the fondant feathers to the covered cake?
The feathers should attach to the buttercream just fine. If you are using a crusting buttercream recipe either mist the buttercream with water before you attach the feathers or wet the feathers with some water or vodka with a paint brush and attach to cake.
