I am going to make the Johnny Depp Mad Hatter hat. I am covering the cake in black fondant. However I just saw a magazine photo of the hat and it has gold and metallic designs on it. What would be a good way to do this? It looks like you could sponge paint it on the fondant. What kind of coloring material do I use?? I will probably stick w/ mostly gold but have no idea what to use for gold coloring or the best method to use.[/i]

I used airbrush paint and a sea sponge when I did my sun and moon cake.

I also used luster dusts mixed with alcohol and a paper towel on the stars on the western wedding cake.

You want something liquidy. I've also ready about using wax paper or plastic wrap balled up to sponge with.

My suggestion would be to roll out a little fondant and play with a few different ways to see what gives you the look you are going for.
