Are you just using the cake mix or are you doctoring it?

DH makes between 5 cups to 6 cups of batter. From my experience white is closer to 5 cups, chocolate 5.5 and golden butter 6 cups.

Unless I am using the Golden Butter, I figure the cake mixes at 5 cups. I'd rather have a little extra than not enough. icon_smile.gif

8in round takes 3.5x2
10in round takes 6x2
12in round takes 7.5x2
Which equals 34 cups of batter. Divided by 5 and you need 6.8 boxes.

So I would buy at least 7.

So what about if your cakes pans were 10"x3, 8"x3 and 6"x3. Would it be a huge difference?

http://www.wilton.com/cakes/making-cakes/baking-wedding-cake-3-inch-pans.cfm

6x3 round - 3 cups batter
8x3 round - 5 cups batter
10 x 3 round - 8 cups batter

That would be 16 cups of batter for a single 3in tall layer of each size.

It all depends on how you doctor the cake mix. I add a box of pudding and an egg and consistenly get 6 cups for the different flavors i make.
