To those who have done cakes with the fondant pleats. do you put a layer of fondant on first then do the pleats or do you do the pleats. When I did mine for a cake I did this past weekend I put a layer of fondat on first then did the pleats on top but when I got ready to cut the cake I took the pleats off because that was too much fondant to put on the plates. So should I do it with just the pleats and not put the first layer on?

I have done this both ways. I didn't notice any difference on the final look of the cake.

One thing to consider is if you have to take a pleat off for some reason and it is attached to buttercream there is a good chance the buttercream will be pulled off too. That could cause a bigger issue.
