What do you use as the base? I have been using 1/2 inch foam core. I recently tried covering it with fondant and was wondering how to attach ribbon along the rim if the fondant is covering the rim of the foam core also. Any tricks or tips for cutting the foam core board smoothly?

What other tips/tricks are there for making beautiful cake boards?

Thanks!

i sand my foam edges down or file them down to get a smooth edge then use a hot glue gun to attach a cloth ribbon around it's edges. :] hth

For a 10" or smaller cake board, I use scrapbooking papers. They are usually 12" x 12". I cover the board with it, and then cover the paper with clear self adhesive shelf liner. That way any grease from the icing won't stain the paper, and you can wipe it off if icing goes on the board where you don't want it to. I then add a ribbon around the board. There are hundreds of different pictures, patterns and styles of scrapbook papers. Hope this helps!
