I am doing my first wedding cake for a friend. I have been making all sorts of cakes, but this is my first wedding cake....and I am extremely nervous! I want to make sure it is perfect. She wants a 4 tier round cake. She was looking at 8, 10, 12, and 14 inch rounds. They are 3 inch deep pans and I was going to double each layer, so about 6 inches. Is this enough for approximately 130 people? Also, what kind of supports should I put in each layer so the other layers do not weigh down and smush the whole cake? Any help and suggestions would be great!!! Thanks in advance!

Those cakes together serve 172 without the top tier served & 196 with the top tier served.

The 3" high deep pans probably won't bake up the full 3", maybe 2 1/2" after leveling, but torted and filled, may still reach about 6" if you double the layers.. Just keep in mind that most plates they use to serve cake at receptions may not accommodate that large a slice, I would double check with the venue ahead of time just to be sure.

If you were to refer to the Wilton wedding serving chart for 4" high cakes and added 50% for 6" tall cakes, you'd get the following:
6" = 18
8" = 36
9" = 48
10" = 57
12" = 84
14" = 117
So... if she's looking at 8x10x12x14 rounds, it would serve 258-294 (first number is for freezing anniversary tier, second number is for serving it).
Definitely enough for 130 people, but almost twice what is needed (and probably not what she wants to pay for!)

If you made a 12x9x6 = 132-150... if she doesn't want to save her anniversary cake, a 12x8x6 would serve 138 total. HTH!

The chart you are reading is for 1 layer 3" tall.
