I know they make candy coating wafers for cake balls but I was wondering if I can melt chocolate or white chocolate chips like Ghiradelli and get the same result.
I know it sounds nuts but I like to avoid all the hydrogenated oil in the wafers.

I'd say go for it! The chocolate may have to be tempered though, so that it hardens some...otherwise, you might have some runny chocolate. It's not something you have to worry about with the candy melts, I think that's why more people use them. HTH!

It works fine. I melted some Ghiradelli chocolate on low heat in the microwave. Stirred until melted.

I use chocolate all the time unless I need a specific color, it works great! and tastes yummy too !
