When I dye the icing it is all the same color (I use buttercream dream). I get the hot spatula and go to smooth it, after completely drying the spatula, and the icing changes colors and the colors is all unevenly colored. It happened on my barn cake in my pictures. Does anyone know what i am doing wrong? Or does the hot spatula method not work well on colored icing? Thank you.

I've had the happen to me to. I think some colors jus react to the heat. That's the only thing I can think off.

The same thing happens to me when it is really dark frosting or chocolate frosting. The heat must have some darkening effect on the frosting, I just make the "marbeling" effect part of the cake, I have only done them for my family so it has been no big deal.

I have had it happen with the brown and the green. That is frustrating if it happens with certain colors. Thanks for your reply.

Fortunately one was a book, so it just looked like aged leather and the other one was the grass on the farm cake, so it wasn't a big deal.

I don't have that problem, but then my buttercream is different. Maybe it's that.

My buttercream is a crusting buttercream made with sweetex instead of crisco.

Oh man. I was hoping that it was something that wasn't going to be a super expensive fix.
