Has anyone used styrofoam for a character head on a cake? I am making a Cookie monster cake and thought the styrofoam would be less heavy than using RKT. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I used styrofoam to make the disco ball on a cake. I didn't have to do any carving--just smeared it w/BC and put on the fondant.

You do have to be sure it is completely covered in fondant to make it food-safe.

I was planning on covering with butter cream would it be ok? It will be resting on the body.

As long as it is totally covered, I would think it is OK. Can you put a small piece of wax paper between the bottom of the head and the top of the cake? It will make it easier to separate when it comes time to serve.
