Ribbon On Buttercream Icing

I tried the waxed paper method of sealing my ribbon. When I put it on the cake it started absorbing the grease, I thought the wax from the wax paper was suppose to prevent the ribbon from absorbing the grease. I ended up putting shortening on the ribbon, this darkened the color of it. Anyone have any suggestions????
