Just when you thought it was safe to go to Craigslist.....

Found this today:

"I have picked up custom cake making about four months ago. Due to being new to all of this, Ive decided to sell my cakes for a LOT less! I make wedding, birthday, funeral, baby shower...etc... cakes. You name it and I will make it. Take a look at my pics below and request some more if needed. Most famous cakes this summer are white with lemon and raspberry filling! Most wedding cakes will cost you $250-$300 dollars...I charge $150 for three tiers.
PS. I can do cake orders in as little as 24 hours INCLUDING WEDDING CAKES! " icon_cry.gif

Is there a "cakewrecks" site for advertising? People, people, people, if you are going to advertise your illegal (in my area), unlicensed kitchen on Craigslist and tempt the Gods of the Health Department at least have a little baking dignity. A three tiered wedding cake for $150 with 24 hours notice? I wonder if that includes the "famous" lemon and rasp.? It's great to know that you can whip out those custom wedding or funeral cakes after "picking up cake making" only 4 months ago.....

Yikes! Don't you just love people like this. What did her cakes look like, by the way?

I'm in WA too and saw this ad. All I could do was shake my head. There are tons of home baker ads on our CL.

I just had to go look... And surprisingly the cakes don't look too bad or anything. I think she is gonna burn out after a week of this especially wedding cakes in 24 hrs. But she looks to have talent.

hmmm. not to sure about this. I would be a bit leary. Must keep many cake layers in the freezer for those 24 hour notice people!! LOL

kansaslaura Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 12:02am

Lots of them on Craigslist in the Wichita area as well. And it's only going to get worse.

Kansas is budget cutting like crazy in the health dept. The last time the inspector was here he told me he was to ask if I had a fax machine. I said..uhhh.. yea.. why?? KS wants him to e-mail in his report, and then they will fax it back to me for me to sign--all so they don't have to provide their inspectors with the printer and paper anymore. He told me there would probably be quite a delay since the can't seem to keep up with the volume in Topeka.

Pleassseee...!!! And, I've heard they're cutting back on the # of inspectors which means this kind of thing isn't going to be looked at like it once was.

I told him I paid plenty for the license and I wasn't going to the store room to haul out the fax machine and hook it up for that.

He really seemed embarassed to even ask.

icon_surprised.gif Her cakes didn't look to bad - maybe she doesn't know it's illegal? This may not be good for your area, who doesn't love a deal.

thatslifeca Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 12:41am

I have a question: How do you know those are her cakes? icon_confused.gif
wedding cake in 24hrs icon_eek.gif with 4mnth under her belt......ohhh pleaasseee.

I feel sorry for the girl who buys into that for her wedding.

BRATTYR Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 1:17am

sorry but no way is that even worth the effort for a three tier cake with notice, that would hardly cover the cost od the supplies.
and i agree with thatslifeca, how do you know those are even her cakes!!!

Karen421 Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 1:37am

Good Point! Unfortunately a bride may not think of that. That could be sad!

jenmat Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 1:42am

that's not funny. that's insanity.

vwolf Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 2:00am

Really? Has anyone done a funeral cake? LOL

Ha Ha...my thoughts exactly. Eeewwww!

jenmat Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 2:23am

My very first cake at my very first bakery job was a pre-done one from the case for a funeral. I'll never forget it. They wanted "In memory of Peggy." and I screwed up the "I" so the other bakery lady had to scrape it and help me. They got so mad because they were going to be late to the funeral. Poor Peggy.

That's what I was thinking too.

kansaslaura Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 2:43am

I've done cakes FOR funerals but never thought of them as a "Funeral Cake" Nothing was written on them, I think the last one was covered with cornelli lace.

Lcubed82 Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 3:02am

I did a cake for a funeral dinner. Sheet with a cross with a few flowers. No words.

Oh honey, I wouldn't worry about it. I'm pretty sure Peggy didn't really care at that point. icon_razz.gif

thatslifeca Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 4:05am

I did a casket cake many moons ago....but it was for halloween. God it was an ungly cake.....reason why I don't carve anything now!

Bluehue Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 4:39am

After 4 months - and in 24 hours - icon_surprised.giftapedshut.gif

LOL - you have to love the *details* in the background of the Top RH photo and the two bottom photos....and the icing bag filled with blue whatever/BC in the baby cake photo.
Just goes to show - the maker of the cakes is pushed for time and can't get things cleared away to take a nicer snap - lollll

Hmmm, why is the floor in the Top RH photo different to the bottom two -
Me thinks - not her floor... icon_confused.gif

Gobsmacked that the 3 tier wedding cake - shells and coral were all whipped up in 24 hours - AMAZING....*cough*

Bluehue.

cblupe Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 5:10am

Unbelievable!!!

cblupe Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 5:14am

Oh, I was reading CL for my area last night and found a new home baker. She states in her ad that she has pets but just closes the door to the kitchen and changes her clothes before she enters. tapedshut.gif

Abbiedal Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 11:48am

come on doesn't somebody local want to callher and say they need a wedding cake this weekend? You know like 4 layers differnet flavors etc. and see what she says she can give you as opposed to what you want!! Sorry I'm in an aggrevating mood today!!!!!

margaretb Posted 19 Aug 2010 , 2:42pm

Abbiedal, I thought the same thing. Order up a 24 hour cake and then refuse to accept it if it is a disaster.

icon_evil.gif LOL ok that would be funny. Say maybe 50 gumpaste roses in pretty summer colours, casacading down the side of the cake. OH yes, we would like 4 rectagular tiers set back to look like stairs and you want her to supply the cake topper. OHHH and could she please please have it at the venue early, we are having 10am wedding outside. I think she could pull that off. tapedshut.gif ohhhh that would be mean.
