Has anyone made these before? I feel like making creamsicle cupcakes and have done some searching for recipes and I am still not sure. Here's my question: Is it the cake that has the orange flavoring or the icing...or both? Anyone??? Just FYI..I bake from scratch so no box mix recipes! Yes, I am a cake snob. icon_redface.gif

Sorry no recipes here, but I would think it's an orange cake with a vanilla icing. Good luck!

Mine is an orange cake with vanilla icing. It tastes better the next day as the flavor develops more.

We make ours with an orange cake then load a piping bag with both orange & vanilla buttercream (each flavor in it's own smaller bag, then drop them both in a huge bag). They taste exactly like a dreamsicle and look really cute.

I do a vanilla cake from scratch and once i poor it in the pan i take powdered orange flavored kool-aid of all things and swirl it into the cake like a marble cake. I am not sure how I came across this but the cake comes out AMAZING, hands down the best creamsicle cake I have had and I ususally just pair it with a vanilla buttercream...Try it out and let me know what you think!

Do you just pur the powder (undiluted), onto the batter and swirl? Does it come out too sweet since Kool-Aid is so sweet?

Plain Kool-Aid is unsweetened...you add sugar when making it into a drink.

Good point.

MacsMom has the best orange creamsicle cake recipe. I don't have time to post the link to her versions of WASC but I bet you can find it through the search button.
It is to die for!!

Just made these kind of cupcakes last weekend. Non butter yellow cake (made a version with yellow cake with butter and seemed to dull the orange flavor) subbed half of the vanilla for orange extract. Added the zest of an orange (will not upset the balance of the recipe). Got a nice orange flavor. A nice vanilla butter cream. I have seen some recipes that incorporate orange flavoring into the buttercream but for me it was just too much orange, not enough vanilla flavor. They were well received. Pretty easy if you have a good yellow cake recipe.

I compeletly agree! I've made this one, but use twinkie filling and orange buttercream icing. I get RAVE reviews! It is super yummy!

My thinking on dreamsicle/creamsicle cake was that the orange was on the outside, with a vanilla center. I do an orange cake, a light orange IMBC and vanilla mousse for the filling. One of my favorite cakes to make... so yummy!

This post is making me want to make these...

All I can say is that if you do Macsmom's recipe, you will be forever hooked. Hands down one of the best cakes I have ever tasted or made. People were actually arguing over getting their fingers onto the cakeboard to mop up the last crumbs/icing icon_surprised.gif

I just made some cupcakes this past weekend. I used a scratch vanilla cupcake recipe, but I subbed 1/2 the vanilla for orange extract and added some orange zest. I frosted them with the buttercream dream vanilla BC. Oh my! These were delicious and I don't even really like orange. I took some of the BC and added some more orange extract and then filled the cupcakes with them. For me this was overkill. But everyone else loved the filling.
