well a few months back i read a thread about a florist who botched up the wedding cake and actually blamed the baker. well that made me think... at the time i just booked a cake and i could tell that the bride and the mom were going to be sticklers. they wanted a fondant covered cake with a narrow ribbon at the base of each teir and a mound of roses for the base and a few 'carefully' placed rosed on alternating sides going uo to the top of the cake and a small mound on the very top. However, they do not like fondant, they really 'don't like it' and want buttercream baby butt smooth.... ok... no prob.

after reading the post i call mob and share my concerns about who is placing the flowers. she said the florist (florist charged $100 for it), i explained my concern and she told me i can do them since i want the cake to be blemish free.

get to the venue, the cake is set up whew, no boo boos, and the florist is 45 min. late. one of them begins snipping stems and sicks one right dead center at the base of the top teir, the stuffs them around the base, the whole time i tell her that i will do them. time after time she smudges my butt smooth buttercream, i them mentioned my wet fine paintbrush for touching up...what does she do? the idiot picks up the brush and then starts'smoothing' what she did, i snapped. i had had enough.

the whole time she kept saying that she didn't want to mess up the cake, oh i have even had to stack cakes, yadda yadda yadda, people don't want us to touch the cake... why hell no, you were like a freakin bull in a china shop and i'll be damned if you mess with my cake.

Made me wonder, did she do that on purpose, did the mob call and tell her about my concerns? I thought there was going to be a wedding and a funeral today and the bad thing was, the police station was right next dooricon_smile.gif i wouldn't have been able to get away with it.

sure you coud have.... hide the body under tha cake table.... she was fine last time you saw yer...*LOL*... Ive had some run ins with florists this year.... She insisted she was going to stick waterpicks directly into the cake... i told her no she wasnt to place the flowers in a proper floral holder... she argued... i sent the health inspector after her... it was kind of funny.... icon_lol.gif

I am a florist and I'm appalled by these stories! I would never ever touch a cake unless it was one that I made myself. I've made cakes for weddings I didn't do the flowers for and I always make sure it's very clear who is putting the flowers on top. Luckily I'm friends with all the florists in the area so I know I can trust them. When I'm doing flowers but not cake, I always deliver the floral toppers in design bowls and let the decorator place them. As for the water pick thing... icon_eek.gif ... Those things are so heavy that even if you COULD stick them in the cake they'd make make it fall apart! I can just see sticking those picks down the side of a cake with all the roses in them and the cake just tipping over. Eek!

*LOL*... They were going to put 2 huge hydrangea flowers in water picks and stick them in the top of the cake.... I didnt trust that they wouldnt leak and of course there is a whole new world of problems there... but the health inspector told them that it would be a huge no no...*LOL*
Other florists I have worked with are awesome and would never try to do anything like that.... this particular store though, they are trying to save a buck and be damed if you are going to tell them how they are to do things...*LOL*... Oh well.... I just wont recomend them any longer....

Some people are just full of themselves. You have to have in your contract that you're the only person to touch or place anything on the cake. That way if you run into an unprofessional florist who won't listen to you, you'll at least have an out when they ruin the cake by sticking stems into it. Or just tell them it's a health code violation to do that, and they'd better get their hands off the cake if they don't want to draw back a bloody stump. Say this while smiling sweetly, of course.

I am a former florist..... no one should touch your cake without your permission. Period.

Shoving naked stems into a cake is just plain gross in my book. Not sanitary at all....

i used to be a florist and would never attempt to touch a cake unless i'd been given permission by the decorator, the bridal party, as for sticking water picks directly into the cake is she mad or just plain dumb, sticking somthing like that into a cake is just a recipe for disaster

you should buy one of those fake hands put a flower in it and "then" when a florist ignores your request of don't touch the cake, (not trying to put down all florist), you can then "show" that florist and say; "this is what happened to the last florist who ignored my request of don't touch the cake". icon_lol.gificon_wink.gif

The last 'florist disaster' I had was many years ago. The bride was ahead of her time and ordered a stacked 3 tier, no pillars--pillars were just "the thing" then.. and so were buttercream roses on wedding cakes. She wanted a fresh red-rose cascade to sweep around the cake. Nothing over done, just a pretty swirl around the cake. I set up the cake, the MOB totally trusted the florist, and I thought I did-she did beautiful work... usually.

I was catering the event as well and went about my business and walked into the main room and nearly fell over! I knew somewhere under that rose bush was a cake! I'm sure that is where I left a cake!

She put so many roses on that cake bees were banging on the door to get in, and it was January!!

I grabbed a shopping bag from the back and pulled 2/3 of the roses off, hid as many of the big holes she left in the cake by shoving them in and stood back. Still a lot of roses, I thought... but I couldn't remove anymore or it would look like I had decorated with swiss cheese instead of buttercream.

In walks the MOB--she shreeked.. "I had no idea there would be THAT many roses on the cake!!"... I handed her the sack full and said, you have no idea...

I had this happen too with a cupcake tower. The florist just started shoving random flowers all over the place, some in between cupcakes, but most of them smashing cupcakes, then she sunk a giant paper flower arrangement right in the center of the cutting cake. It took everything in me to not rip apart all of the centerpieces and other arrangements she had done. That night I went home and added the clause to our contract that we're the only ones who put things on cakes/cupcake towers.

I worked in a florist shop for a few years and that is why I am so adamant about ME being on the only one to put flowers on my cakes. icon_mad.gif I have seen the damage a flustered florist can do.

I am a big woman and NO ONE gets past me to my cakes!! icon_twisted.gif I am the only one who puts flowers on the cake!

YOu could have gotten away with the murder.. all you need is one cake decorator on the jury!! icon_biggrin.gif

a reminder to take a picture of how you leave the cake before anyone else touches it too!

mckaren Posted 23 Aug 2010 , 10:28am

I would have been standing between the florist and the cake with arms spread wide saying "Don't think for a second that you will be going near this cake!" icon_lol.gif

costumeczar Posted 23 Aug 2010 , 11:59am

Maybe if they start touching the cake we should go over and start rearranging their centerpieces icon_twisted.gif
