What do you use to paint colors on cake and fondant?

For hand-painting on a fondant-covered cake, I used Americolor gel mixed with clear vanilla extract. Worked like a charm.

Or you can use vodka instead of clear vanilla extract. You just need something clear with a high alcohol content. The alcohol will evaporate and no one will get drunk.
