I'm making a treasure chest for a friend. I have seen some wonderful treasure chest cakes on cc, but no tutorials. Can someone give me some directions for making the open lid, and how to stabilize it? Thanks, Everyone!

I did a treasure chest a few years ago (before my CC days so no pic on here) and here's how I did it. I made the box for the main part of the chest, then carved out a little from the inside of the top, leaving a lip around it so I could fill it with sparkly rock candy, gold covered coins, etc. Then I made the lid on its own cake board and arranged the "treasure" so it was higher in front and on the front of the sides and none at the back of the chest. Then I placed the lid on the treasure so it looked (and indeed it was) as if the treasure was spilling out of the chest and pushing up the lid. I believe I doweled the back of the lid down into the main cake to keep it in place.

you could also use RKT stacked and then cut on an angle like a wedge to prop it up. or styrofoam cut in a wedge, and then wrapped in plastic wrap. once you have your wedge, it's just a matter of glueing (i always use hardening chocolate) your top piece on it. and of course your top piece will be on it's own board of some sort. you'll easily be able to cover the wedge with booty icon_smile.gif

once you've placed the top part on, take skewers/dowels and drive them through the top piece, through the styrofoam/RKT and then through the treasure cake and then into your cake board. it's not going anywhere!!!

Karabeal's idea is probably the easiest. Otherwise you do have to worry about supporting the lid so it won't close or fall off. Making hinges can work, but it has it's own set of difficulties. I've done a couple of these recently, which I need to post.

I did one recently (pink, in my photos) and my top was cake, and I did as karabeal said - but I supported the 'lid' in front with two dowels (hidden by treasure icon_wink.gif and I put a dowel thru the lid into the bottom layer to keep it from sliding. I also made sure to fridge it before moving it so the BC had time to set up.
