My son loves ribs, so much that we are having dinner at a BBQ restaurant. He has also asked if my girlfriend and I can make a cake that looks like ribs. We are going to use fondant but the coloring of the fondant seems a little intimidating. I don't want just a brown blob. How can we color this to have that rib appearance? We will be "sculpting" the ribs and then covering with the fondant. By no means are we cake decorators we just make cakes for my son and daughters birthdays. Thanks for any help.
I made a bacon cheeseburger cake a while ago. For the bacon, I just experimented with chunks of fondant until I got a color that worked. I started with red, then added brown (and marbled in white, for the fat). You could spread some raspberry or strawberry jam or colored piping gel on the ribs to look like barbecue sauce. Have fun with it!
