Fondant Problems

Today I tried covering a cake with fondant for the first time. I used Wilton prepared fondant, since this was my first try. The fondant had been in a container for a couple of weeks. At first, I thought it was going really well, then I noticed the CRACKS! Why did this happen? I really want to learn how to do this, but I'm discouraged. Any suggestions would be happily received. icon_cry.gif
