I need all you expert cakers to help me please. I want to make an Uncle Sam hat cake for the Fourth of July and stack 4- 8" round cakes on top of one another and ice in buttercream (fondant accents.) Would I put 2 of the layers (with a layer of filling between) then add supports and cardboard cake circle, then the top 2 layers (with a layer of filling between) then ice the whole cake?? I'm thinking I should put a dowel through the center too. Am I correct? Do you think 4 cakes will be high enough if I'm using 2 inch pans?

Sounds like an excellent plan. You could do without the center dowel down all cakes if you aren't transporting it.
