Hi all. Delivered this today. This is my very first wedding cake. The wedding is to be really small and the bride only needed it to serve 35 people so I made it like this to give the looks of a full size wedding cake. The bottom tier is a dummy cake and the middle tier is a 10" yellow cake.
She wanted red callas with ivory accents because her dress is ivory and her bouquet is red and ivory callas. This is what I came up with. The cake topper has 36 callas and 15 stefanotis. I also made the flower bowl from gumpaste.
When I was trying to take the pictures at home before delivery, I couldn't get the picture to come out without a shadow because of a window in the kitchen. After seeing the picture, I had to include it because I just love the way it looked.
She was very pleased with the final product.
Thanks for looking and all comments welcome.
Very very nice!! Good Job
It's so perfect! You did an amazing job and I love those colors.
great job.. very beautiful! I love your flowers
It's beautiful!...smooth, clean, straight edges...and the colors are very complimentary. I also liked the shaded pic as well
I liked both pictures. You did a great job.
Soooo now, tell us what you charged.
Thanks everyone. This cake came about because of a referral by someone I go to church with (I take a cake to church each month for the birthdays of the month). I got a friend request on FB and it turned out to be this bride asking me to make her wedding cake. She saw the calla lillies that I have posted on FB and she wanted those on her wedding cake. She gave the colors and stacked construction and said that after seeing pictures of my cake, she trusted me and gave me full reign.
We had originally talked about just a two tier cake but since she only needed to feed 35 people I decided that it would be best to make it like this for her photo ops if nothing else.
She was absolutely blown away by the topper. She just loved the whole thing.
Charge? Not enough, I can tell you that. I had told her my charge was $2.00 per serving and the topper would be $20.00 for a total of $90. I later decided to add the dummy cake, and I gave to her the anniversary cake as a gift. I did it for this price because it is the very first wedding cake and I thought it would get me the experience. This would have normally been $145.50
So was it a 13" dummy, a 10" yellow cake, and a 6" top tier? Just wondering, how much were your costs?
(Not trying to slam you--Just trying to see the cost of your labor per hour)
I have no idea how much I had in it because I had to rebake both cakes because I had problems with both of them at different times. The dummy cake was a 14". We make our own dummy cakes from a sheet of styrofoam from Menards so it only costs a few cents to make the dummy itself. I think I will probably increase my charge for the flowers to around $2 per calla and maybe $.75 to $1 for the stephanotis. I had originally purchased an SPS system to assemble this cake but only used it for the top tier because I forgot to punch the cake boards before I put them in the freezer (dirty iced) last week (but I'm glad I had frozen them because my oven went out on me earlier this week) and I had to rebake the top tier last night around 10:00 PM (yes, oven is working again). Trial and error is always costly but that is the only way you can get the experience needed to do something like this. Besides that, I have a really good friend whos daughter is getting married in Sept. and she wants me to make the cake so I was eager to get the experience.
Your cake is beautiful!!!!
Good idea making the floral "bowl" out of gumpaste. I have never thought of doing that before.
$2 per calla? Ummm . . . depending on size I charge $3.50-$4.50 each. (And I buy them for about 90 cents.)
Beautiful cake! You did a great job!
