I need tips on how to make a 3D palm tree cake topper. Although I don't think I'll have a problem with the trunk I am concerned with how to get the palm leaves to stay up. Have attempted before and the leaves either broke or have just flopped. I have seen realistic palm trees as cake toppers before but need tips on how to do it myself. Should I use gumpaste or fondant? I have made a couple of cakes with palm trees. I make the leaves out of gumpaste, cut the fronds with a knife and then "ruffle" them a bit to make them look a bit more natural, before drying the leaves over crumpled tinfoil to give them some movement. Once the leaves are dry I have attached them to the trunk with RI. Just make sure that the top of the leaves are fairly flat so that they will stack nicely on top of each other.
