When placing the longer dowel through the center of the cake... if it's sharp will it go through the cardboard with a little pressure or do I need to cut holes in the cardboard?

It will go through, just usa a small, clean hammer and give it a few taps.

The first time is scary but it does go right through. a couple light taps with a hammer is all it takes.

Thanks! It's my first stacked BC cake and I have to travel a gravel road and it will sit outside... taking all the precautions I can icon_smile.gif

DITTO to those who answered!
I use foamcore boards under my cakes and the dowel goes through them with no issues at all! I have also doweled styrofoam dummy cakes as well.

Michaels has the thick ones that I use. You can also buy those in bulk as well.
