China Pattern On Fondant

A friend has asked me to make a cake for her mother that collects blue & white china plates.
I plan on doing a floral pattern on fondant but I am not sure if I should try to paint on it directly or make an icing design and use a paint brush to give it depth. Both new techniques to me. It isn't required until August so I plan on making a trial cake this month to give it a try.

Has anybody done something like this before? Any ideas on what would look best.

I have searched CC and seen many gorgeous painted cakes but nothing that captures this idea.

Thanks Iamcakin, that thread is awesome. I think painting is the way to go.
