Not sure if you want to make an open or closed book. I have done a couple of closed books. You can either bake a rectangular cake or as I did bake a square , cut a strip off the side and add to the bottom. The simplest way is to cover the cake in white fondant and then score lines around 3 sides usind either the side of a ruler or back of a knife. Then cover the top and side panel with rectangular piece of fondant that slightly overlaps on the edge for the cover. Using the back of a knife or ruler or some such to make an indentation on the left hand side to look like the binder part. Then lay a thin strip around the other 3 edges to look like the back cover.
I carved mine when they were slightly frozen to get the shape on the binder panel.
Hope this makes sense and helps.
