Hi, Im new to making cakes, ive always done my sons birthday cakes but they have been really simple. My husband and I would really like to build this cake for his birthday this year. I was wondering if anyone could give me any info or help on how to start it and what to use. Thanks here is a pic

I recently took out the Ace of Cakes book from the library and there was this whole section about building cake support structures. This looks like that type of cake. It would be my guess that there is a wooden support structure under there and the cake parts are placed on top of the platforms. When doing a cake like this you need to think about it from the structure out.
