Well I'm about to attempt my first ball cake and wasn't sure how to go about covering it. How does everyone else do it? Do you just cover the whole cake with white fondant and then add the black patches or do you take the plain CC cake and the the black and white patches and put them in the right spots like a puzzle, if you know what I mean
I'm thinking of doing half a ball sticking out a cake if that makes any difference
I made one with the "puzzle pieces", which looks more realistic. The half ball will be easy. The problem with the whole ball is lining the pieces up at the bottom.
I have done several soccer ball cakes. For me what looks the best is to use the template that comes with the pans and cut out each hexagon. There are two different templates and I use different colors for each. Then I put them together like a puzzle. It's time consuming but it makes it look like a real soccer ball.
