icon_sad.gif Help! I live in Adelaide in Australia and cant seem to find flower nails to buy anywhere here at all. Everyone I ask in the cake shops are asking me 'wat are you talking about?"asthey have never heard of either nails or strips.
I have tried the towel in strips wrapped around the pan but that is not doing too much for me with keeping the cakes even. It does seem to be working for the moistness though. where can I buy bake even strips? no body seem to know what im talking about and my strips keep sliding off the pan as its tapered at the bottom and driving me crazy.
Please help going crazy would love if anyone could help!!!
Ive got 3 cakes to do in the next 3 weeks and would love to have them...

Hello aange,
here is a link for you http://www.completecakedec.com.au/
They are in SA.

scroll down left hand side of page unril you see EQUIPEMENT PAGE 1-
click on that
Scroll down that page and you will see a Flower Nail
$2.00 i think from memory.

Bake even strips -
I use a large tea towell -
Very wet - rung out and folded into 3... length ways.
Wrap around cake tin and secure with safety pin...at top and bottom
Works a treat - might you need to turn your temp down a tad and cook for a bit longer?

My oven is permanant fan forced so when a recipe calls for 108C i bake at 160C ...as baking at the 180 will over cook cakes and dry them out dreadfully.

ETA:
You can order on line from here perhaps
Altho if you search eBay - they are available there also

I have a flower nail that came as part of a piping set I was given - never used it and doubt I ever will... If you want to pm me your address I'll stick it in the post for you?

If I'm baking fruit cake I wrap the outside of the tin with wet newspaper and tie on with string - bit fiddly but it works well and cheap as!

Bake even strips aren't worth the investment. Like Bluehue, make sure your towels is wet and don't totally wring them out. I think my strips are about 4" wide and it usually wrap two or three layers around the pan. Bake even strips will definitely be harder to keep on pans with taper sides. Ateco makes nails that are specifically designed for baking in cakes. Not sure who carries them.

Indeed, I find a really large thick tea towell wet (wrung out gently works best) - i just lay it on the bench and fold it lengthways until i get the height of my cake pan - plus knocking the temp down a bit and cooking for longer. I have never had to use a flower nail by using the *wet towell*
Hmmm, sounds a bit like *the wet t/shirt thing* - icon_wink.gif lolllllllllll

icon_biggrin.gif Well I went crazy searching again after posting this thread and you wont believe it I found a site in australia that will deliver to me and they had both the flower nails and the bake even strips... so Have ordered them... It was CakeDeco.com.au the nails were $3.40 ea and the strips were $42.90 I think there were 3 sizes for that. I thought was a bit pricey but didnt care as I had finally found them and need them for the weekend coming!!! Going to be using a straight pan for one cake and tapered for the big one so will have to take your suggestions and will tie string on I think or mabe use metal clips to hold the towel on... thank you guys!!!

This is one of my favourites - http://www.cakedecoratingcentral.com.au./ - great range and excellent customer service and never had any problems with payments etc. They also have 2 stores on the outskirts of Sydney, not sure if that is any use to you location wise!
