Help On Stacking A Tiered Cake!

my first cake i did that was a tiered cake i left the cake boards in between each layer and used dowels and the bottom tiered was getting smashed! I do know i made the bottom alittle thin, but am i suppose to leave the cake boards in the middle or is it just cake on cake? any and all advice is welcome
i do more cookies and cupcakes and am trying to do cakes so once again any advice is welcomed

Leave the boards in the middle. Here's a picture that might help, the boards are the blue parts.

If you think of the boards as table tops and the dowels as table legs, that can help too. The bottom tier can be any height you want, as long as the dowels are cut to the right height for it.

Texas...that is awesome. I try putting it in words but ya know what they say about a picture. That is so much easier than trying to explain it.
