- mix cake
- bake cake
- clean up from mixing cake
- make icing
- clean up from making icing
- allow cake to cool
- while cake is cooling, make filling (if applicable)
- clean up from making filling
- level, fill, stack, and frost cake
- decorate cake
- box up cake, put in fridge (if applicable)
- final clean up

Usually all in one day.

prterrell, you don't let your cakes rest? I've been having problems with cake bulging and I always hear that you have to let your cakes settle before decorating.

I like to let my cake settle after I fill/crumb coat them. Usually overnight.
