Using a clay extruder for fondant is the easiest way to get even, straight ropes.
If you're thinking of buying one, here's a thread on which ones work the best with fondant or gumpaste:

You can also get great ropes/snakes by rolling with a fondant smoother...this does take some practice, especially for longer ones or if you need multiples and have to match widths, but they will be completely smooth.

Never use fingers...doesn't work.
