Covering Mdf Board?

Hi helpful folks! I am making a large 3D building cake this weekend and have a 2'x3' MDF board for the base. It is covered in a white veneer (used for inside of kitchen cabinets etc.) I am at a bit of a loss as to how to cover this. Will fondant alone make it food safe? Press and seal won't stick to it easily and I was worried about using that anyway (wouldn't it get shredded when the cake is cut?).

I don't want to use a cake board between the cake and the base, as it is an unusual shape and would require lots of finicky cutting....I'd love to just lay the cake on the mdf but I want to make sure to take no risks. This is a building replica for 250 distinguished guests for the opening of the building.

I normally just use pre-covered cake boards (lame, I know) and haven't ventured far into the world of board-covering...lol I have used things like glass cutting boards in the past for heavier cakes. But right now I am at a loss....

Anyone have any advice? HELP!!!
