I got an order for a 3D Dump Truck cake like the one if the attached picture. They also want me to put the Truck on top of a square cake(probably a 10 or 12" square cake) not just the cakeboard. I know you all have probably answered this question 100 times before! So would love any advice on how to price a cake like this??

Thanks so much!

Let's just say I hope they are prepared to pay for a cake like that. The dumptruck alone looks to feed 35-40 maybe more.I price my 3D Cakes at $5.00 a serving so the dumptruck alone would be about $175.00-$200.00..adding the 10 inch square will add an extra 50 servings double layer and 72 servings for the 12 inch double layer so you are looking at about anywhere from 90-120 servings for the bottom square.I charge $3.00 per serving for my layered cakes so...put that together...looking at about $470.00 and up...

Thanks for your reply! But it is only going to be sitting on ONE square cake not two tiers. I am going to put it on top of either a 10" OR a 12" depending on how big the truck turns out to be. When she called about the order, she said to just let me know how much it would be and she would pay it. Apparently it is for her grandson's birthday and she is willing to pay whatever it takes to get it.

Well even if you only do the 10 or 12 inch in one layer you are only losing say 25-35 servings so the cake is still gonna be about $390.00..That is if you lose 35 servings x $3.00 =$105.00 minus the $470.00 would be ....$365.00.I would phone her again and tell her the cost because I can garantee you dollars to donuts she will have a lump in her throat when you tell her. Most people have NO idea how much time and effort not to mention cake there is there for the price.I bet she expects maybe $80.00....Good Luck!!

Thanks KiddieKakes! I called her this morning and quoted her $335 and she of course said no! LOL So we went with a more simple stacked cake with a dump truck theme for $150. Thanks for your help! I always tend to underprice myself and I was definitely going to again on this one, I didn't know how much to charge for something like that. Thanks again!

for cake like this and the one in my pic below........I consider the top cake to be a "carved cake" and consider the bottom cake to be a "tiered cake"

I think that's the fairest way to price........so figure out your servings for the dump truck and charge a carved cake price and add that to a single layer 10" square (about 25 serv?) of a tiered cake price.

HTH

I was in the same predicament when I started getting calls for quotes on this cake as well....and just charging a regular cake price for the bottom cake, seemed like the whole thing was too cheap, but charging carved cake pricing for the whole thing seemed like too much (and it seemed dishonest since I wasn't "carving" the bottom cake).

I feel good about the cost of a tiered and carved price together for these types of cakes. Obviously you'll have to work it for what you charge for carved and tiered and make sure it's a price you can live with!

KHalstead...That's exactly what I do...charge 3D cake prices for the carved cake and tiered cake prices for the layered cake.

I would also charge 4.25 per serving for the fondant butterfly cake but for me a 6 8 10 12stack would feed 130
