my son's best friend came to his birthday. I made the cake, chocolate with IMBC. I guess he didn't like the icing.

At the table he leans over to my son and says "this is the worst birthday cake I think I have ever had"

I couldn't help giggle (he is 7) on the way home my son says "you know the cake wasn't THAT bad" his reply, "I guess not, if you enjoy eating play-doh"

I guess he prefers my buttercream icing icon_smile.gif

Wow, that kids seems pretty cultured for 7!

I wonder why he thought IMBC tasted like play-doh? I could see how a kid would think fondant tastes like that, but IMBC?

Oh well. Did his mom like it? If she likes it you're golden!

My niece made a face at my father-in-law's bday and said, 'I don't like the icing - it tastes like butter.' I just thanked her for being honest and told her she didn't have to eat it if she didn't like it.

Kids are brutally honest. I have received so MANY rave reviews for my SMBC that I have not changed a thing since. Everyone loves it except my niece and she's entitled to her opinion.

Reminds me of the time when I was 2-months postpartum and holding my first and my nephew exclaimed, 'Looks like you have another one in there!' in front of my inlaws and my BIL and SIL. Kids just say what comes to mind!

When it comes from kids, it's just nature and accepted.
But when it comes from ignorant adults, it's hurtful.

the best was when my family and i were at a sweet sixteen party and my 6 year old son tried the cake and came out and told everyone it was "extremely dry" and "gross" and that my daddy should have made the cake..i couldnt stop laughing. Have to love kids!!!

Ah yes, the brutal honesty of kids! I have a 7 and a 4 year old and I recently put brown sugar SMBC on a chocolate cake and noone in my house (not even my husband) liked it. I am getting really tired of the super sweet powdered sugar frostings and was really hoping they would love it, but nope!

Shortly after that, we went to a birthday party and the parents bought the cake at a high-end bakery. The cake and filling were gobbled up, but I looked around and almost everyone (kids and adults) had left the icing (a meringue-based icing) on the plate. Can't please everyone all the time, I guess! icon_smile.gif

So true. When it comes from adults, it deserves a good smackdown.

When it comes to kids cakes, I always make the powdered sugar icing; for adults - who can appreciate the meringue buttercreams - I do the SMBC.

I only do SMBC for a few of my friends that actually like it. Most of them agree with the kids and think powdered sugar buttercream is the only way to go.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IMBC, but most people do not know what it is let alone SMBC. They are so used to what I call decorators icing(Butter/shortening, powdered sugar and flavoring).

If I did a poll to today at work I'd be surprised if 1 out of 50 knew what a "True" buttercream was.

Just the nature of what people have become accustom to. However, I have tried it with adults who are looking for a less sweet icing. I've even mixed half IMBC with decorators icing with good results for kids.

Just my 2 cents,

My own daughter hates fondant....... I told her she better learn to love it since it pays the bills around here! She's 8, but she'll tell people in a heartbeat that she doesn't like the fondant, I'm trying to get her to stop running busniess off! icon_biggrin.gif

Last year my neice had two birthdays. One I did the cake for and one came from the store. Well, my brother ordered the cake, and I believe he ordered some kind of whipped cream frosting for the cake. One of my neice's friends told her it was the worst icing she'd ever had!

Hopefully this year I can make her official party cake again. My neice loves to show off her cakes to her friends!

My 5 year old son hates my buttercream - he would rather have store bought frosting. Whenever I have leftover cupcakes and ask if he wants one, he asks if I can put the canned frosting on instead icon_smile.gif I just have to laugh.

Glad Im not the only one to experience this. I made a cake for my nieces b-day last year and she didnt say anything back then. But this year I asked her if shed like me to make her cake and she said um well you made me a cake last year. I said yeah so? Then she finally said, well I didnt really like the frosting She said I really like the kind you buy in a can So I bought canned frosting for her cake this year. But I do remember as a kid, I didnt like any kind of frosting. Unfortunately Ive grown out of that. icon_biggrin.gif
