when is it better to use modeling chocolate instead of fondant?

I use modeling chocolate for flowers, almost any other type of added decorations, trims or borders. I also use on cookies, cupcakes and like a small small cake.
I only use fondant or bc to cover a whole cake. I don't think modeling chocolate would hold up too well on a whole cake, if it is too hot and it is more expensive. HTH
