Did Anyone With A Biz Watch The Cricut Cake Premier On Hsn?

As I keep hearing about how someone can buy a "plain cake" and decorate it themselves for less money and be a hit a party, I'm thinking please don't let me get calls or emails asking if I offer this. I hate to put something on my website about not selling undecorated cakes...
I think that's a good point.
I don't have the Cricut (either one) because of the cost (decided to send the kids to the dentist and camp, instead ) but I have to say that I am worried about what this will do for my home based business. Will people not order now because they feel like they can just do it all themselves (regardless of how they will look like since the "average" home baker doesn't necessarily know about leveling, frosting dams, etc)?
Yeah but honestly how many non cakers are going to invest over $400 in something that they may only use a few times a year. I really don't think there is much to worry about a bride spending $400 on the Cricut cake so they can spend $50 or so on the cake itself. Plus, like you said it is a bit harder to use than they are truly showing. Anyone who is naive enough to purchase this to do their own wedding cake will soon find that it is more trouble than it is worth.
If you read the reviews you will see that some are not very happy that nothing was mentioned on the broadcast that you have to purchase a license for each cartirdge that you want to use for professional use.
Oh I agree that I don't think there is something to "worry" about, because trust me, you can't get an undecorated cake for $5 from me..lol
Just as there were crazy articles on how to cut wedding cake costs and selling completely decorated dummy cakes to brides, I just won't be surprised what someone will come up with this thing.
I've been asked from customers, if they can bring me cakes they have already baked and I "just" decorate it. It wouldn't make much sense to me if I was a "hobby" baker to invest, but how many "hobby" bakers do take orders and operate as a business. Check out the some of the topics posted here.
These are some thoughts that were going through my mind as I watched the presentation.
However, just think of all the barely or gently used Cricut Cakes that might be available in a year or so! It is not as easy as it looks and as we all know you have to spend some time (in my case a lot) on learning how to get your gumpaste/fondant just right. And most of them will probably be running to Michaels to get Wilton fondant..... I think those of us who aren't getting one now just need to be patient and wait for the deals!
Dummy question - what is SCAL?
SCAL & MTC are programs that you download onto your computer and connect to your Cricut with a usb cord to create your own graphics/shapes to use on the Cricut.
Yesterday on the cricut cake board the moderator told us that the cookie dough has to be very thin in order to work.
I just read provocarft is suing Make the Cut http://www.scrapbookupdate.com/2010/04/07/provo-craft-sues-make-the-cut/
I dont think we have anything to worry about! I am cake decorator from home in ky. As long as cricut has a license on there product what is the big deal. U could always go back to there sales pitch etc... They would be liable to. Id say after you learn to work with gumpast and fondant it wont be an easy task and they will have wasted there money! I think the machine will sell out from people who already are cake decorators. I did order mine .. I cant wait to use it. I hope i dont get any calls about plain iced cakes because I will tell them the same price and that its and insult to a cake decorator who has taken the time to take classes and investment that many of us already have. Plus we already have a pretty good cliental as well....I am still excited about getting the cake cricut though...
I'm a hobby baker/decorator and my friends order their cakes from a bakery plainly iced (they get charged the same) and I decorate them with fondant/gumpaste figurines. The reason i don't bake the cakes is because they want a specific recipe that i don't know how to make/not really interested in making it since it's a PITA lol. So for those of you that are business bakers charge the same price. Less work same $$.
I don't charge for the decorations since that's my birthday gift.
It's not designed for cookie dough, but only to decorate cookies with the gumpaste sheets to place decorations on top of the cookies that you make.
The demo stated that you can take frozen cookie dough and put it through?
Yes, The demo said you could use it on cookie dough. It said something about not needing cookie cutters anymore, and even using it on premade refrigerator cookie dough. I recorded it to my DVR so I will watch it again and see what all she said. The demo she was doing on fondant, the fondant was pretty thick. That will be my first experiment with it . I am sure it will be some trial and error to get the right thickness but I will post my results after trying it.
I laughed at the $5 grocery store cake too. And how they said you could get a sheet cake for $5!!! Ummm, do you people even know what a sheet cake is?????
and btw, isn't your mom FANTASTIC???? My mom only calls me to borrow money.
Yeah my Mom is pretty Awesome! We are really close (We have a house cleaning business and a retro apron shop together, aside from my cake business) I think I have too many businesses! hahahhahah
