Just grease the whole ribbon so it is all the same color.
I apply tape to the back of the ribbon to prevent shortening from soaking through.
Even better - use fondant ribbon. It has the advantage of being food safe.
i grease the ribbon down too. if you plan on putting a bead or small shell border in front and you apply tape to the back the front will still absorb the grease and show where the border touches it.
